There is a type of inflammatory arthritis known as gout. It generally causes severe pain and discomfort, and most often affects the big toe. High levels of uric acid are responsible for the onset of gout, which can lodge in the form of crystals in the joints of the big toe. Eating foods that have elevated levels of purines, such as shellfish, red meat, and sugary drinks, can trigger gout, or it may develop for genetic reasons. People who have frequent gout attacks may be prone to developing other medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, or congestive heart failure. Some methods may help limit gout attacks, including drinking plenty of water daily, limiting sugar intake, and engaging in gentle exercise. Gout can compromise lifestyles, so it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you manage this condition.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.
Symptoms
- Intense Joint Pain – Usually around the large joint of the big toe; most severe within the first 4–12 hours
- Lingering Discomfort – Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
- Inflammation and Redness – Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm, and red
- Limited Range of Motion – Decreased joint mobility
Risk Factors
- Genetics – Family history of gout increases risk
- Medications – Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
- Gender/Age – More common in men until age 60; estrogen may protect women until that point
- Diet – Eating red meat and shellfish increases risk
- Alcohol – More than two alcoholic drinks per day raises risk
- Obesity – Higher body weight increases risk
